Captain Tom Moore has been blown away by the ‘outpouring of love’ for his sponsored walk. The 99-year-old veteran says he is prepared to carry on walking to raise money for the NHS even after completing his target of 100 laps. His eldest daughter Lucy Teixeira said: ‘At least count, my dad has had around 100,000 cards and a thousand gifts of everything from chocolate and flowers.’ The impressive haul has been delivered to Bedford School by the Northampton sorting office.
The school, attended by Captain Tom’s grandson Benjie, is storing the post and send birthday gifts in their great hall and staff will adhere to social distancing guidelines as they open each token. Yorkshireman Captain Tom, who lives with his daughter Hannah in Marston Moretaine, in Bedfordshire, has now raised more than £28 million as the public flocked to sponsor his garden walk ahead of his milestone birthday. His original target of £1,000 was broken in around 24 hours and he extended his challenge to 200 laps after he completed the first 100 14 days ahead of schedule. Adam Briki, Captain Tom’s nephew who works as a paediatric junior doctor at East Surrey Hospital, said: ‘It has brought us all together as a family. It has been great fun, and the more money that is coming in, the better. ‘The fact that a 99-year-old man is raising millions by walking in his garden is testament to what we still have in this country – that British support that he keeps going on about.’ Captain Tom is said to have a strong appreciation for the National Health Service and its dedicated workers after receiving brilliant care throughout his life.
